Bucky Irving leads Oregon football to win over Washington State

While quarterback Bo Nix typically gets the headlines for Oregon football, it was running back Bucky Irving who took the headlines on Saturday in a 31-16 win over Washington State.

It was a sluggish start for both teams offensively after the coin toss where Oregon deferred to the second half. After several three-and-outs by both teams and another missed field goal by Camden Lewis. The game was tied at 3 at the end of the first quarter.

Both Bo Nix and Bucky Irving scored in the second quarter pushing the Ducks to a 17-13 lead going into halftime. The Ducks were off to a better start in the second half to pull away scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter, both by Bucky Irving. The Oregon run game was in full force from the start.

For Washington State, the Cougars’ offense, which has been based on the passing game over the few seasons, saw them break 100 yards on the ground for the season midway through the first quarter. As a team, WSU had 93 rushing yards for the season entering the game vs Oregon.

For the Ducks, it was Irving who led the way with multiple long scoring runs. Oregon racked up 541 total yards and 248 on the ground including 129 by Irving to go with his two touchdowns. Jordan James was also able to get in on the act with a 100-yard game backing up Irving. James had 13 carries for 103 yards.

Cameron Ward was the Cougars leading passer and rusher on the losing end completing 34 of 48 passes for over 400 yards and a touchdown. He also scampered three times for 30 yards.

For Nix, he also had a solid day which had no interceptions or turnovers. Nix, now the leader of games played at 56 in NCAA history finished the game completing 18 of 25 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns, including one on the ground. He completed 72 percent of his passes in the win.

Oregon football hits the road this week to take on the Utah Utes. The Utes beat USC on the road on Saturday night. The Ducks and Utes kickoff on Saturday at 12:30 pm Pacific Time on ABC.
