Last week, Kyle Wittingham’s Utah Utes put a lid on Lincoln Riley’s Caleb Williams’ led offense in their win over USC. Last year’s Heisman trophy winner did throw for any touchdowns against Utah, but Bo Nix threw two in the first half. He also ran in the first score of the game.
Coming out of halftime Joel Klatt and the Fox broadcast put it simply on a graphic:
The No. 8 Oregon Ducks scored on their first drive of the third quarter to take a 28-6 lead. Through a half and change, Nix is 18 of 23 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He has touchdown throws to Jordan Jones and Troy Franklin. Franklin has seven catches for 89 yards to start the game with nearly two full quarters left.
Utah came into this matchup ranked 20th in total defense, but 79th against the pass. Nix is taking advantage of the Utes’ weaknesses on the backend and is continuing to make his case for the Heisman trophy.
Last week Nix set the NCAA record for starts by a quarterback and the experience is clearly paying off for Oregon as the Ducks are running away from Utah. Beyond just the Heisman trophy, Nix is also making a case to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.
Klatt praised his ability to always remain on time and to get the ball to his best players. Kaltt continued to say that pro football is about the player more than the schemes.
Klatt said, “I see that from Bo Nix” and added, “he’s never in a rush and because of that he always gets the ball to the best matchup possible.”
