Oregon football: Oregon State rivalry alive and well, for now
Oregon football and Oregon State have come to a scheduling agreement that will allow the teams to face off on the gridiron in future years starting in 2024. The move keeps alive one of the country’s longest running rivalries in football.
Earlier this week, John Canzano broke the news that both teams have been hard at work behind the scenes over the last few weeks. It took moving some games and working with other teams to move games, in some cases against different opponents.
On the Oregon side, their game against Texas Tech in 2024 was moved off the Ducks schedule. Texas Tech will now play Washington State. Idaho was able to move their game with the Oregon so that Oregon State could fit into the schedule next season. Oregon and Boise State will play on September 7th and the Ducks and Beavers will meet in Corvallis on September 14th.
With Oregon moving to the Big Ten next season, any future meetings moving forward will likely take place during the non-conference part of the schedule, unless an agreement with the Big Ten Conference can be made in future seasons. The current agreement is for two years. OSU will visit Autzen Stadium in 2025.
Oregon football fans should glad the rivalry isn’t dead yet
I am happy to see that both schools were able to work something out. There is something about an in-state rivalry that is important to college football, regardless of what you call it. Some still call it the Civil War, others it is the Rivalry Series. It has been played on the football field every year since 1894, with a few exceptions.
For Oregon State, the powers that be are also working to move ahead with the 2024 schedule which is now coming into view. There’s the game with Oregon. They will also face Purdue and Idaho State. The Pac-12 has a scheduling agreement that will have OSU facing six Mountain West opponents next season.
Oregon State is looking to fill out their schedule and according to Canzano are bringing Cal into the mix and potentially another ‘Power 4’ opponent.
Oregon State will wrap up the 2023 season facing Notre Dame in the Sun Bowl on December 29th. Oregon meets Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl on January 1st.
