One of the biggest concerns that a program has when adding players via the Transfer Portal is the potential for cultures clashing. Getting anyone to buy into a system is hard, especially for kids at this age for the most part is used to being the star of their team. The coaches and programs who can pick not just the right talents, but also the right people typically win big while others end up with culture issues.
Dan Lanning has built a strong culture in Eugene, and as the Ducks continue to take shots at winning the National Championship, adding the right people is key. Curt Cignetti added the right pieces and got Indiana a National Championship while Mike Norvell made mistakes, and finds himself on the hot seat.
Offseason addition praises everything right about Oregon's culture
On Monday, the Oregon Ducks hosted their own media day, where Dan Lanning and some of the players addressed the media. Among the most interesting players to take the podium was incoming transfer Carl Williams IV, who joins the Ducks from Baylor. When Carl Williams IV spoke about the transition to Oregon, he highlighted everything that's right about the culture, and wrong about the outside noise.
"Walking into that room, I feel like the standard was made. As in, like, this is a hardworking school. Like all the glitz and glamor and stuff like that, we really put in hard work. Blue-collar people, we like to say. But that's kind of the vibe that I got coming in here. As in, be ready to put your hard hat on and work, and that's something that I appreciated."Carl Williams IV
Outsiders look at Oregon as a fancy school and a program that's too flashy to ever get over the top to win it all. Opposing fans see the Nike partnership and all the uniforms and give the Ducks this white-collar tag that likely isn't deserved.
Under Dan Lanning, the exact opposite has been true, and this has been a program that typically smashes the teams that carry that white-collar style. When Colorado was ruling social media at the start of the Deion Sanders era, Oregon didn't just dominate the Buffaloes, but completely killed any momentum they were building.
Carl Williams IV is a player who should see Oregon as a higher caliber program, and one with more flash than he's used to, if you're being honest. The Ducks do have nicer facilities than Baylor, and it would be easy for Williams to be blinded by the resources, but in the end, it's the hard work, blue collar mindset that sticks with him.
When outsiders doubt Dan Lanning, they're looking at a lot of the parts of the program that they don't understand, and it's a lazy narrative in a lot of ways. The Ducks are clearly building in the right direction, and it's all the reason to believe that he's the coach who can take the program to it's highest heights.
