Sooners robbed as Pat Chung makes a phantom recovery
It was one of the weirdest, wildest, wooliest football games in Autzen history, the kind of ending a boy dreams up throwing footballs to the swing set in the back yard.
Oregon trailed 33-20 with 3:11 to play in the fourth quarter. OU tailback Adrian Peterson ran for 211 yards and a touchdown.
With 1:09 to play Dennis Dixon scored on a 16-yard run to make it 33-26. Paul Martinez kicked the point.
The coach's son, Luke Bellotti, came on to attempt the onside kick. Everybody in the stadium knew it was coming. The hands team was on for the Sooners.
KOIN-TV ran a replay the next day from their sideline cam showing two Oklahoma players leaving the field with the ball aloft, but somehow even after replay the officials awarded it to Oregon, even though it hadn't traveled 10 yards before Brian Paysinger deflected it, then Pat Chung scooped it up and lost it.
Duck luck. Dixon found Paysinger for 24 yards and a go-ahead TD with 45 seconds to play, 34-33.
Forever the Cardiac Kids, the Ducks give a 54-yard kickoff return down to the Oregon 27. Oklahoma runs Peterson into the middle, then sets up for a winning field goal by Garrett Hartley.
"Blocked by Oregon!" Dan Fouts on the call, noting that the Ducks had beaten OU for the first time in seven tries, a miracle of resilience and officiating ineptitude.
'There's a new king in the PAC-10'
Mark Sanchez and the No. 12 2007 Trojans were driving for a tying touchdown with 3:20 to play in the fourth quarter. A pass to Joe McKnight got them down to the Webfoot 33.
Matthew Harper stepped in front of a Sanchez pass near the goal line and returned it to midfield. Jonathan Stewart ran for 103 yards and two TDs. Harper picked Sanchez twice
Mariota pulls out 2013 Civil War in color rush night game
Victor Bolden put the Beavers ahead 35-30 with a 25-yard dash on a Jet Sweep with just 1:38 to play. Mariota drove the Ducks 83 yards in 9 plays, hitting Josh Huff for their third passing touchdown of the game with 29 seconds left.
'Kenny Wheaton's Gonna Score!'
For many Duck fans, it was the moment when they realized things could be different. Bill Musgrave had elevated the team to a couple of minor bowls, but UO hadn't been to the Rose Bowl since the 1957. They'd been a punching bag for the Huskies for most of the last 30 years.
With 1:04 to play, Washington drove down to the 8.
