Dan Lanning adds to his reputation after calling timeout to watch Michigan fans leave
By Sam Fariss
Dan Lanning is that guy. Already this season, the Oregon football head coach has flexed his knowledge of the game by forcing his own team into a penalty against Ohio State to run more time off the clock.
Now, Lanning is only adding to his reputation. Not only did Lanning force a penalty against the Michigan Wolverines on a punt, continuing the Ducks' drive which led to yet another touchdown against Michigan, but he also called a timeout towards the end of the game as Oregon was marching down the field.
Sure, a timeout during the last minutes of the game, while your team is driving down the field, isn't out of the ordinary, but this timeout had something different to it: Lanning had planned it a week in advance.
Every week the Oregon athletic department and video production team release a short film about the previous matchup. With snippets of practices and meetings leading up to the game, postgame in the locker room, and in-game moments, the videos are an in-depth look into the football team.
This week, the film of the Michigan game shows Lanning giving his team a heads-up that they "control the atmosphere" of the Big House and that he was going to call a timeout during the fourth quarter to let his players watch the Wolverine fans leave. He did just that.
As a third-year head coach, still on his first-ever HC job, Lanning has quickly made a name for himself amongst the best coaches in the country. So far, he has led the Ducks to a 31-5 overall record and Oregon sits at a perfect 9-0 after the Michigan matchup,
Many people have responded to Oregon's postgame film saying that Lanning is a savage, that he is going to make everyone in the Big Ten hate the Ducks, that they love him, and that they're rooting for him.
Well, no matter the response, there is one undeniable fact about the Oregon Ducks head coach: Dan Lanning is one of one.
