The Oregon Ducks came into the season with hopes of winning the National Championship fresh off back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff. Dan Lanning was able to retain stars like Dante Moore, Matayo Uiagalelei, Teitum Tuioti, and various other veterans to push to finally bring a championship to Eugene. While Dan Lanning was able to retain the players, he wasn't able to retain the coordinators with Will Stein and Tosh Lupoi both taking head coaching jobs.

While Oregon has missed the likes of Dante Moore and Evan Stewart for stretches, even at full health the offense hasn't looked good. With pressure mounting on Dan Lanning with a 4-3 record, he's stated several times that all possible changes are on the table. On Sunday Morning, Dan Lanning proved that he's willing to show it, and not just say it.

Dan Lanning fires offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer amid abysmal start

On Sunday Morning, Oregon Football announced that the Ducks had relieved Drew Mehringer of his duties.

In the statement released by the school, Dan Lanning said the following about his decision, and Drew Mehringer.

"Drew has been a valued member of this staff since 2022, and I am appreciative of everything he's done for Oregon, he played a tremendous role in what this program has accomplished over the last several seasons. This was a decision I felt was in the best interest of our football program, as I believe a new direction is necessary to move our offense forward. I thank Drew for his efforts and wish him all the best."

It was clear that Oregon couldn't head into next season with Drew Mehringer as offensive coordinator, so it only made sense to make the move sooner rather than later. The Ducks will announce an interim offensive coordinator, and it will give Dan Lanning a 5 game sample size to see if anyone on staff is a viable option.

The fanbase isn't going to want the Ducks to hire from within as that formula is what got Oregon in this place to begin with. Will Stein's departure didn't get nearly enough attention, and the sample size with Drew Mehringer as the offensive coordinator at Rutgers would've been enough to believe that he wouldn't work out.

Where losing Drew Mehringer is going to hurt is with losing his elite ability to develop tight ends. The Ducks are coming off sending Terrance Ferguson into the Draft as a second round pick along with Kenyon Sadiq as a 1st round pick. Considering how well the Ducks have developed tight ends as of late, losing Mehringer on the staff is certainly going to sting.

Dan Lanning had been on a hot streak of hiring from within as Will Stein picked up right where Kenny Dillingham left off, but sometimes you have to look outside the program. Oregon wasted an incredibly expensive and talented roster, and if Lanning is going to get over the hump, he has to nail this next offensive coordinator hire.
