Mike Gundy said what he said and Dan Lanning said what he said. Then, the two teams actually played football, and the Oregon Ducks walked away with the (seemingly) easy 69-3 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
After the game, in true Lanning fashion, the Oregon head coach ensured that he got the last word in, getting one last dig in at OSU head coach Mike Gundy.
"I told our team right before the game," Lanning said. "It never requires extra motivation for an opportunity to go out and kick ass, but it never hurts when someone pours gasoline on the fire."
No, the Ducks never need a reason to go out and win, but when an opponent's head coach feels the need to make comments about the roster, it sure will add a little extra fuel.
Before the Cowboys' plane ever left Oklahoma, Gundy felt the need to comment on the fact that Oregon has a bigger NIL budget than Oklahoma State does. Immediately, Lanning shut down any idea about that being the reason the Ducks would defeat the Cowboys.
Dan Lanning in full on how Mike Gundy's comments about the amount of NIL money around Oregon affected his team's play this week:

To sum it up in simple man terms, Gundy said that Oregon was only good because the program had the money to pay athletes as much as they wanted. Then, Lanning said "we spend to win" and other programs "save to use it as an excuse."
Gundy dug his own grave. Of course, as soon as Lanning feels the need to defend his players, he is going to ensure that the opponent is ruined. A 69-3 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys is exactly what Lanning expected after Gundy shared his opinion on the Ducks.
Oregon improved to 2-0 on the season, with a 128-16 win margin over its two opponents of the season. Oklahoma State fell to 1-1 overall, with a 20-point win over the UT Martin Skyhawks.
Next week, Oregon will face the Northwestern Wildcats in the Ducks' first conference game of the season. Oregon and Northwestern are scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 13, and the game will be broadcast on FOX.
