Dan Lanning reveals heartbreaking Jeremiah McClellan injury update

While the Oregon Ducks beat Portland State in an 84-0 blowout on Friday Night, everything wasn't positive. The biggest concern came when Jeremiah McClellan warmed up with the team, but wasn't on the field to start the game. When Jeremiah McClellan emerged from the locker room on crutches while sporting a walking boot, it was instantly a massive concern.

Given that McClellan warmed up for the game, he didn't come into the matchup with an injury, but something clearly occurred during warmups. After the game, Dan Lanning told the media that McClellan suffered a "tweak" in warmups, but didn't provide a full update.

Jeremiah McClellan out for an indefinite future with a broken foot

On Monday Night, Dan Lanning revealed that the Ducks would be without Jeremiah McClellan for the time being as the starting wide receiver suffered a broken foot.

Given that Jeremiah McClellan came into the season with major breakout potential, seeing that he'll miss time with a broken foot is heartbreaking. McClellan instantly flashed his breakout potential in the Boise State game with 6 catches for a career high 150 yards and a touchdown.

A broken foot typically takes anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, while it could take even longer for an athlete like Jeremiah McClellan to return to action. If Jeremiah McClellan isn't able to return to action, he'll finish the season with 7 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown over two games.

Oregon played the Portland State game without Jeremiah McClellan, and they're going to need players to step up to fill his role in the offense. True Freshman Messiah Hampton has stepped up to help fill the void, and given the way he's quickly built chemistry with Dante Moore, he could be in-line for the starting role.

Messiah Hampton caught 3 passes for 31 yards in the loss to Oklahoma State, but in the Portland State game he had a breakout performance with 6 catches for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The wide receiver the Ducks need to step up the most is highly touted transfer Iverson Hooks who joined the Ducks from UAB. Hooks was named to the Preseason Biletnikoff Award watchlist coming off a breakout season for the Blazers, but he's struggled to make an impact. While Hooks dealt with injuries to start the season, he was available for Portland State, but didn't get in until late in the game.

Oregon has recruited at a high level year over year, and now it's time for some of the younger players to step up. Gatlin Bair, Messiah Hampton, and Iverson Hooks all have a golden opportunity to step into a starting role, and if any of them can rise to the occasion, it would go a long way toward keeping this offense clicking.
