Oregon began the second quarter with a drive to the Northwestern 24, kicking a 42-yard field goal by Atticus Sappington after the Cats broke up a third and 7 pass to Dakorien Moore. Big plays on the drive included a 16-yard run by Jay Harris, picking his way through the middle. Moore-to-Moore hooked up on an 11-yard pass, but a deep throw to Malik Benson failed.
The Wildcats employed a layered defense that forced Oregon to work short and patiently for their yards, safeties set off the ball. Northwestern gained 7 on an out route, took a false start, then Himon busted up the middle for 9 and a first down. A flat pass to the tight end gained 12 out to the 48.
On the very next play quarterback Preston Stone lost the ball off his hip, smothered by Teitum Tuioti for an 18-yard loss. Matayo Uiagalelei got the Ducks off the field with his third sack of the year.
A 54-yard punt pinned the Ducks back to the 11. Two running plays to Limar gained nothing, but on third and 10 zipped a pass to Dakorien Moore for 20, followed by an out route to Malik Benson good for 12. The Ducks pushed the ball out to their 43, 1st and 10. Northwestern called a timeout.
Oregon's running game looked sluggish, Davison managing just a yard on first down. So far the Ducks had just 57 yards on 14 carries, 4.1 a carry. , leading 10-0 at the two-minute timeout.
Shuffling forward in a collapsing pocket, Moore lasered a 20-yard pass over the middle to Malik Benson, calm and on target on third and eight. Limar ran inside for seven, then no gain. Moore kept, diving for a first down but had his helmet knocked off.
With Novosad out, Luke Moga came in at quarterback, but the Ducks took a timeout to get Moore back in the game. Good decision. Moore threw a strike down the seam to Kenyon Sadiq for a 24-yard touchdown and a 17-0 lead with 31 seconds to play.
