Oregon's 39-31 loss in T. Boone Pickens Stadium was a thorough failure of coaching and culture. Outgained 554-281, the Ducks were slow, sloppy, and uninspired in all phases.
They missed tackles and dropped passes. They committed stupid penalties, jumping offsides. They folded in the pocket under pressure and fumbled away their last chance. In their first two games, Oregon is 0-6 on 4th down, the last one a rushed, ill-advised throw into the turf on 4th and 8 at their own 33 with 6:48 to play, an indefensible coaching blunder with little chance of success.
On the other side, the game was a great college football story, a testament to determination and resilience. Oklahoma State had lost 20 games in a row to FBS opponents, beaten a week ago by Tulsa 24-10. Under new coach Eric Morris the Cowboys had a great plan and played fast, sending Dan Lanning to his first defeat against an unranked opponent, now 49-9 overall.
The visitors led 31-30 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. From there the 23.5-point underdogs outscored the No. 6 Ducks 9-0 while driving 75 yards for a touchdown in 12 plays, then being gifted a field goal when Dan Lanning's brain short-circuited.
A defensive touchdown, a brilliant 96-yard sprint with a batted ball by speedy linebacker Devon Jackson gave Oregon a 7-3 lead early. Another batted pass got the Ducks the ball at the Oklahoma State 1-yard line when it fell into the arms of Matayo Uiagalelei. After Jordon Davison pounded over to make it 17-14, the Cowboys answered with a long scoring pass to Wyatt Young, 52 yards.

A 42-yard field goal by Gage Hurych made 24-17 OSU at halftime. Dante Moore found his rhythm in the third quarter with touchdown throws to Dakorien Moore and Evan Stewart, 36 and 38 yards, but the hosts refused to fold, writing a new script for themselves two games into Morris' tenure.
Jubilant OSU fans carried out the goal posts. The Ducks sent one player out to meet the media, defensive lineman Teitum Tuioti. They travel to 3-0 USC in two weeks.
Two weeks into the season this team looks like this year's version of 2025 Clemson, LSU and Penn State, all national championship contenders at the beginning of that year but each finishing the regular season 7-5. The offensive line is particularly in disarray, allowing four sacks with the woeful Webfoots rushing for just 3.0 yards per carry.
Drew Mestemaker's offense is predictable and ineffectual, particularly on critical downs. In addition to the 0-6 mark on 4th down, the unit is 9-26 on 3rd down. Draft stock has plummeted for Moore, who processes like a Commodore 64 computer. Fans were hoping for a Bo Nix-like leap in his recognition and decision-making, but that is not in evidence. He can throw a pretty ball from a clean pocket, but that's it, and Mestemaker and Koa Kai lack the coaching chops to teach him.
Two years ago over the summer Dillon Gabriel loaded the receivers and quarterbacks into his van for a passing camp in Grants Pass. This year Oregon's offensive stars took a celebrity reality show trip to Japan, unveiling a massive set of billboards in downtown Tokyo. The low-tech, get-to-work approach produced better results. Maybe the Ducks are victims of their own hype. They're looking like a culture that's lost its way.
