Former Raider and Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden, winner of Super Bowl 38 with the Buccaneers, Monday night football color analyst and star of "Draft Day" has a schtick he does now as a flack for Barstool in which he receives a box of swag from a different team and makes a video about it.
Gruden's boyish enthusiasm sells the bit. He opens the oversize box, precariously wielding an ordinary kitchen knife as he gushes about the coolness of the gear while ad-libbing an oral history of names and great moments of that given team.
Friday he received the coolest box of all, from the acknowledged kings of fashion ("7 million uniform combinations, zero national championships,") the Oregon Ducks.
"John Madden went to Oregon. Lindsay Wagner went to Oregon." Gruden riffs, citing great Oregon players like Haloti Nga-ta, Ahmad Rashad, Penei Sewell, the Great Dallas Cowboy Mel Renfro, the point of the knife precariously close to his wrist.
"LeGarrette BLOUNT! He'll smash your face off."
The payoff comes at the end, when he gets a friendly greeting from one of his old players, a former Duck and Raider.
He dons the apple green throwback sweatsuit and says, "I feel like Vanilla Gruden."
Now strictly a sports celebrity, Gruden posted a 117-112 record as an NFL head coach, leaving the sidelines in 2021. He went to the University of Dayton, a backup quarterback who never played much.
At least 14 of his former assistants have gone on to be head coaches, a list that includes Sean McVay, Mike Tomlin, Kyle Shanahan and David Shaw.
