For the Former President of the Sheldon High Fishing Club, it all started at Quarterback U.
Justin Herbert, quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers, is 6-foot-6 and makes $52 million a year in the National Football League. He grew up two miles from Autzen Stadium and went to high school at Sheldon High, starring in football, basketball and baseball. His grandpa Rich Schwab played for the Ducks in the '60s, a teammate of Dave Wilcox, a lifelong family friend.
At Oregon Herbert took over as the starter on a 4-8 team five games into the season. In a game against No. 11 Utah in November he led the Ducks to four touchdowns in the final 15:27, connecting with Darren Carrington on a 17-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left on the clock to win 30-28.
His sophomore year he broke his collarbone running for a touchdown against Cal and missed four games. He came back for his senior year in 2019 and took the Ducks to the Rose Bowl, running for three touchdowns in a 28-27 win over Wisconsin.
The Chargers took him with the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Now in his sixth year in the league, he's thrown for more passing yards at the start of his career than any quarterback in NFL history.
He's tall, handsome and rich, with wavy surfer hair and one of the most glamorous jobs in pro sports. It isn't surprising he's dating a music star and a Victoria's Secret model. Thursday he threw for 227 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-10 win over the Vikings. On Friday he just wanted to take his girl to a basketball game. That's what happens when you're talented and gifted, working hard to make a good living doing what few people can do. She probably appreciates the normalcy and ease with which he handles his ridiculous celebrity.
