Oh, he has done it again. Last night, the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes, led by head coach Mario Cristobal, blew a guaranteed win against the unranked Louisville Cardinals.

The Canes are now feeling the pain that the Oregon Ducks grew accustomed to during the four years that Cristobal was their own head coach: the pain of losing mid-season games.

In seasons that the Ducks were projected to return to the College Football Playoffs, Cristobal seemingly couldn't pull off the wins that were nearly locked-in victories for Oregon, resulting in the Ducks playing in the Rose Bowl or Alamo Bowl instead.

Mario Cristobal record at Oregon

  • 2018: 9-4 overall (5-4 Pac-12), Redbox Bowl win
  • 2019: 12-2 overall (8-1 Pac-12), Rose Bowl win
  • 2020: 4-3 overall (3-2 Pac-12), Fiesta Bowl loss
  • 2021: 10-3 overall (7-2 Pac-12), Alamo Bowl loss (under interim head coach)

At the end of his time in Eugene, Cristobal actually abandoned the Ducks as they headed to the Alamo Bowl, leaving Oregon to take the job at Miami before the season was even over.

In 2019, Oregon's best season under Cristobal, the Ducks blew a lead over the Auburn Tigers to kick off the season, almost immediately negating the team's chances of making the CFP. However, after piecing together nine consecutive wins, Oregon was heading toward a top-four ranking.

Then, in classic Cristobal fashion, Oregon lost a matchup against the unranked Arizona State Sun Devils, setting them up to eventually play in the Rose Bowl instead of the CFPs (where they defeated the Wisconsin Badgers behind Justin Herbert's MVP performance).

Now, the Hurricanes' hopes for the rest of the season aren't entirely dashed by the loss to unranked Louisville, but Oregon fans probably could have told the Miami crowd not to count their chickens before they hatch because Cristobal is their head coach.
