RJ Day, a three-star quarterback from St. Francis de Sales High School in Columbus, Ohio has committed to Northwestern as part of their 2027 class.
Day is the No. 86 quarterback and No. 1361 prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He's the eldest son of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. What's even weirder is that he was recruited to the Wildcats by former Oregon head coach and Ohio State OC Chip Kelly, now the offensive coordinator for David Braun in Evanston.
At 5-11, 203 Day wasn't exactly Ohio State material. His other offers were from Cincinnati, South Florida, Purdue and Syracuse. Already as a junior he's set school records with over 5,700 career yards and 54 touchdowns, a three-year starter with a 67.3 completion percentage.
Twenty-eight years ago, Kelly was Ryan Day's coach at New Hampshire, where the elder Day set school records for completion percentage and touchdowns.
Over his career Kelly has crafted successful offenses around quarterbacks with wildly varying styles: Dennis Dixon, Jeremiah Masoli, Darron Thomas, Marcus Mariota, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Will Howard. He's won conference titles with several of the them, a national championship with a loaded Buckeye squad and Howard in 2024.

The game changes constantly and Kelly has been peripatetic, but wouldn't it be something if RJ blossomed as a quick-throwing spread quarterback for the Wildcats, somehow leading them to an improbable upset over the Buckeyes one day in their new stadium, 35,000 seat Ryan Field?
It's every son's dream, beating the old man. NWU has beaten Ohio State only once, a 33-27 overtime victory in October 2004.
RJ may have to earn his first win on the driveway basketball hoop. Braun, Kelly and the Wildcats have a long way to go to match up with the nine-time national champions.
