At 3 p.m. PT on the 247Sports YouTube Channel, four-star linebacker Nick Abrams announces his college commitment, deciding between Oregon, Georgia, Alabama and Michigan. It's another one the Ducks aren't likely to win.
Abrams, 6-2, 220 from the McDonough School in Owings Mills, Maryland seems ticketed for Georgia. He told Jeremy Johnson of "Dawgs HQ, “It’s an environment where I can see myself thrive and be my best self. I also want to continue to build relationships with all of the coaches and really see how they’ve made advances to take care of your body with rest and recovery."
After missing out on 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson, who committed to Texas yesterday, Kirby Smart isn't likely to whiff on two in two days.
It points out to a persistent problem Dan Lanning has had in recruiting. Though he's brought talent to Eugene in all four cycles, he's yet to land an elite linebacker recruit. Brayden Platt, Kamar Mothudi, Dylan Williams and Gavin Nix were all solid prospects, but only Williams cracked the Top 200 in the 247 Composite at No. 199.
Lanning, who coached linebackers at Georgia before becoming defensive coordinator for the national championship squad of 2021, has swung and missed at the position he used to play at William Jewel College, coming up short for Atkinson, Abrams and Talanoa Ili in the class of 2026.
Largely it's a case of timing and location. Today at Duck Sports Central, Scott Reed observed, "I know there are some that think maybe Oregon will make a stronger offer to Abrams, but the logistics of travel are not going to improve with a stronger overall NIL package."
The fact is that it's a long plane trip from Maryland to Eugene with no direct flights, while Athens is an 11-hour drive. Add those travel barriers to the legacy the Bulldogs have in sending defensive talent to the NFL, and Oregon has some catching up to do.
On Wednesday, July 16, 4-star LB Nick Abrams will announce his commitment on his birthday between Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Oregon.

Abrams has an 83" wingspan and runs a 4.57 40. The film speaks louder than the recruiting ranking, which slots him in the Nix/Williams level. Watching him, he diagnoses plays extremely well and hits with violence. He visited Oregon on June 20.
Abrams runs really well and hits like a freight train. His pursuit and second effort are exceptional, and he's been well-coached. At 220 he has the size and development to play early. He'll thrive at Georgia, in all likelihood.
