Oregon battling Big Ten foe for prized Ducks legacy recruit LeGarrette Blount Jr

Over the past few weeks, the focus has quickly shifted from the 2027 recruiting cycle to the 2028 cycle for the Oregon Ducks coaching staff. The Ducks had an incredible Summer as every weekend of official visits led to the staff securing a commitment from another prized target. Given that only a few targets remain up in the air, the staff has been able to focus on starting to build the 2028 recruiting class.

When a recruiting cycle first truly kicks off, everyone looks at the in-state recruits and if they’re lucky the legacy recruits as early names to know before the bigger battles materialize. One of the most fun storylines of the 2028 recruiting cycle that Oregon fans get to follow along is the recruitment of LeGarrette Blount Jr.

Oregon battling Ohio State early for LeGarrette Blount Jr

This Summer, Oregon made every fan feel old when the Ducks offered a scholarship to LeGarrette Blount Jr. The 2028 recruit is the son of former Oregon Ducks star and long-time NFL star Lagarrette Blount.

As Lagarrette Blount Jr’s recruitment comes into focus, the Ducks won’t be simply handed a commitment they’ll have to outduel plenty of competition. Early on, the school that the Ducks are stuck battling is Ohio State as he told Rivals’ Brandon Huffman the two programs stand out the most.

While his father became a superstar as a punishing running back, Blount Jr will look to make his impact on the other side of the field as he’s being viewed as a safety at the next level. According to Rivals' Industry Recruiting Rankings, Blount Jr is a 3-star recruit ranked as the 540th ranked player in the country, the 42nd ranked safety in the class, and the 14th ranked player out of Arizona. 

Just because LeGarrette Blount Jr is playing safety doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have the playmaking ability as he looks like an electric wide receiver when you turn on his film. Given the raw ball skills Blount flashes, it would be interesting to see if the staff considered looking at him as a receiver.

The Ducks have their work cut out for them in the recruitment of Blount as this could become an all-out battle for the commitment. Ohio State and Oregon are often clashing on the recruiting trail these days, and it would feel like a massive disappointment if the staff missed out on an exciting legacy recruit.
