In the middle of May, the Oregon Ducks' outlook at cornerback in this recruiting cycle quickly started to look bleak. The top target for the Ducks Donte Wright did flip his commitment like the coaching staff hoped for, the only issue was that he picked Miami over Oregon. That loss only became more damaging when Oregon commit Ai'King Hall flipped his commitment to the Canes as well.
Heading into the Summer, and official visit season, it was clear that the staff would need to re-evaluate the cornerbacks in this class, and set new top targets. For all the concerns in the moment about the position, Oregon's group couldn't look better on the first day of July.
Oregon lands elite cornerback Hayden Stepp on incredible day for the Ducks
When Donte Wright came off the board and Ai'King Hall flipped, the obvious cornerback to shift the focus to was Bishop Gorman star Hayden Stepp. At the time, Stepp ranked as a 5-star recruit with Oregon in his final 4, and he had the exciting athletic profile that fit what the Ducks constantly look for in their recruits.
The biggest hurdle to overcome was going to be Alabama who's had a ton of recent success recruiting and developing cornerbacks from the West Coast. While both schools got an official visit from Stepp, Oregon clearly made the impression and push they needed to once they got the elite recruit on campus.
On Wednesday Afternoon, just 15 minutes after Oregon secured a commitment from elite cornerback Tae Walden Jr, the Ducks struck again landing Hayden Stepp on Rivals' Summer Signing Day. The Ducks beat out Alabama, Cal, and Georgia down the stretch to pick up a pivotal recruiting win.

According to Rivals' Industry Recruiting Rankings, Hayden Stepp ranks as the 44th ranked player in the country, the 7th ranked cornerback in the class, and the top player out of Nevada. Rivals is the only recruiting service with Stepp ranked outside the top 10 at the position and outside the top 100 in the class, but another solid season could land him in 5-star contention.
Hayden Stepp brings an exciting profile as a 6-foot-3 and 175-pound cornerback fitting the mold of a cornerback with length that is succeeding the most in the modern era. Stepp's long arms and athletic ability make it so that even when a wide receiver looks to be open, they're never truly open, as he has an elite ability to recover.
After the outlook at cornerback in this cycle looked troublesome in May, you couldn't ask for much more at defensive back in this class. The Ducks' two newest additions Tae Walden Jr and Hayden Stepp each rank as top 100 recruits in the class, giving Oregon a pair of blue chip pieces to develop at the position.
The duo joins another exciting cornerback, in-state 4-star recruit Josiah Molden, already committed to the Ducks. Add in another top 100 recruit in safety Semaj Stanford and 3-star safety Malakai Taufoou, and this class is shaping up to be incredible.
