Oregon football recruiting: 5-star cornerback to announce on July 5

Brandon Arrington, a 6-3, 175 cornerback from Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, California, the No. 8 prospect in the nation and the No. 1 athlete, will announce his college decision on July 5th.

Arrington visited Oregon for the Spring Game this weekend. He's run the 100 meters in 10.27 and is the state champion in both the 100 and 200, running the latter race in a state record time of 20.35.

He met Pro Duck Christian Gonzalez on his visit and told On3 Sports, "Everything was perfect." His other finalists include USC, Alabama, Penn State and Texas A&M.

The date of July 5th is interesting, because last year at that time, Dakorien Moore committed to Oregon with a fireworks show on his front lawn, streamed live online.

Softball beats Notre Dame, 10-1

Though the Irish boast a storied history in football their softball team fell to 23-30-1 after a Monday afternoon loss to the Ducks at Melissa Cook Stadium on the southeast corner of campus, a fair distance from the shadow of Touchdown Jesus northeast of the football stadium.

The Ducks came to town for single game after sweeping Indiana over the weekend, in no way intimidated by the rich legacy. They struck for five runs in the first and toppled ND 10-1 in five innings.

The big blow was a three-run homer by Emma Cox, but in all the Ducks struck for 11 hits and stole three more bases to bring their school-record total to 150.

Cox rapped two hits good for four RBI, while right fielder Aryanna Shaw put together a 3-3 day at the plate. Taylour Spencer pitched four innings in relief for the win, allowing two hits, a single earned run and striking out five. She's 4-2 on the season.

The Ducks host Michigan State on Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium, the first game of a three-game series. Oregon stands atop the Big Ten at 17-2 and 45-5, a game ahead of second-place UCLA.
