Duck golfer nears top of the leaderboard at Women's Amateur

Kiara Romero of the Oregon Women's Golf team fired a 5-under 67, good for third on the first day of the Augusta National Women's Amateur at Champions Retreat in Augusta, Georgia.

From San Jose, California, the sophomore is a preseason first-team Golf Channel All-American, a national Freshman of the Year last season. She trails first-round leader Megha Ganne by four strokes.

It's the sixth time the tournament's been held, featuring 71 of the top women amateur golfers. The first two days are held at Champions Retreat, with the final round Saturday at Augusta National Golf Club, site of the Masters. Round 2 will be broadcast Thursday on the Golf Channel. The final round is Saturday on NBC, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT

Four new arrivals report for spring football practice

Newly enrolled in school and joining workouts, Brandon Finney, Dierre Hill, Jadon Canady and Theran Johnson took reps Tuesday, joining their position groups. Under NCAA rules their first two days of participation have to be noncontact.

Hill is a speedy freshman, a four-star all-purpose runnning back from Belleville Illinois. Finney is the No. 10 cornerback in the 2026 class, yet the third-highest CB prospect on the Oregon roster. Canady, a Nickelback from Ole Miss, earned Second Team All-SEC from the College Football Network. A transfer from Northwestern, Johnson started 26 games for the Wildcats, 10 pass breakups and two interceptions last season. He's a redshirt senior, listed at 5-11, 182.

Tracey bolts, Rapp visits and ranks favorites

Former Portland Pilots forward Austin Rapp visited the Ducks Wednesday, the same day that senior guard Jadarian Tracey entered the transfer portal. Tracey averaged 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds over two seasons with 38 starts.

His departure leaves the Ducks seriously short of numbers and scoring, down to seven scholarship players. Rapp could be an upgrade. The freshman from Melbourne, Australia averaged 13.8 points a game, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Pilots. He has the Ducks among his Top Five schools as he weighs his options.

Scores from the Diamond

Oregon women's softball clubbed OSU in Corvallis, 9-1. The rattled Beavs made three errors while the Women of Oregon pounded out 11 hits to raise their season record to 32-3, ranked No. 5 in the nation ahead of a weekend series with Michigan at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Stefini Ma'ake belted two home runs while Elise Sokolsky went the distance from the circle, seven innings of one-hit pitching with six strikeouts.

The Men's Nine led through six innings but continued their slump with another late-inning collapse, playing a single game at Joe Etzel Field at the University of Portland, losing 7-6. Another meltdown by the bullpen proved costly, a walk and three hit batters (all with two outs) leading to a walk off win for the Pilots.

It's the third loss in a row for Mark Wasikowski's squad, who host Michigan in a weekend series beginning Friday night in PK Park beginning at 5 p.m. PDT. The Wolverines are 7-5 in the Big Ten, 16-12 overall.

Last night Anson Arroz and Jacob Walsh homered for the Ducks.

The mound matchup featured two brothers as opposing starters, lefthander Ian Umlandt for Oregon, righthander Nolan Umlandt on the hill for UP. Ian won that head-to-head battle, giving the Webfoots an early lead with two innings of capable pitching, striking out two and allowing a single run, unearned. The visitors touched Nolan for a pair of runs in his two-inning stint, though he struck out three.
