Resurgent diamond Ducks thrash hapless Beavs in series sweep

Jason Reitz hurled five strong innings, leading the Webfoots to a 3-2 victory over Oregon State Sundy afternoon in PK Park.

The win gave the Ducks a three-game series sweep over the No. 3-ranked Barkrats and brought their season mark to 30-12.

Reitz allowed one run in five innings, struck out and walked five, The bullpen, which had struggled again in a midweek loss to the University of Portland, slammed the door with timely, sterling relief work.

After Ian Umlandt gave up one run in two innings of work, Cole Stokes pitched a scoreless 8th and struck out two, clocking 97 mph on the radar gun with his fastball. In the 9th, Seth Mattox struck out the lead off batter but then surrendered a one-out double.

Lefthander Santiago Garcia induced a ground ball to reliable third baseman Chase Garate, then struck out Easton Talt to end the game.

At the plate the Ducks got home runs from Maddox Molony and Jacob Walsh. Molony stole three bases, 3-3 at the plate with two RBI.

Weekend attendance for the three-game set was 12,424. The two teams resume their rivalry Tuesday with a single game in Corvallis, 5:35 p.m. on KOIN TV.

Softball juggernaut outslugs Hoosiers, 9-7

At Andy Moore Field in Bloomington, Indiana, the Lady Webfoots mowed down IU for a three-game series sweep Sunday, bringing their season record to 44-5 with a 9-7 victory.

The Ducks sit atop the Big Ten standings at 17-2, a game-and-a-half clear of second-place UCLA.

Doubles by Rylee McCoy and Katie Flannery and a second-inning triple by Kedre Luschar paced a 17-hit attack. McCoy drove home four runs in a 3-4 day at the plate, while leadoff hitter Kai Luschar rapped three singles in five at bats.

The Ducks built an 8-2 lead before Indiana came back with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, all off Lyndsey Grein, who gave up a pair of home runs.

Elise Sokolsky started in the pitching circle and got the win to reach 13-2. Staci Chambers came on to get the final two outs for a save. Double plays by McCoy, Jones, and Flannery provided the winning edge in a slugfest.

Record number of Ducks get shots at the NFL

Over the weekend after a record ten Ducks were drafted, then seven more signed contracts as undrafted free agents while four more earned training camp invites.

In all, 21 Oregon seniors will vie for spots on 53-man rosters with a chance to extend their football dream.
