Liberty take 1-0 series lead in Phoenix as Sabrina Ionescu scores 16

Sabrina Ionescu shook off a late-season toe injury to lead WNBA defending champion New York to 76-69 overtime win at Phoenix in their best-of-three first-round playoff series.

The Pro Duck sparked her squad with 16 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds, struggling a bit from the field as she made just 6-18 shots and 4-12 from 3-point range. Teammate and former Duck Nyara Sabally did not play.

The series moves to New York on Wednesday, a 5 p.m. PT game on ESPN. The Liberty can move on to the second round with another win. Sunday night, guard Natasha Cloud led all scorers with 23 points.

Oregon grad Satou Sabally contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds for the Mercury. though she also struggled with her shooting touch, 2-17 from the floor and 1-10 from three.

Liberty star Breanna Stewart left the game during the overtime period after falling to the floor and clutching her left knee. Head coach Sandy Brondello told reporters after the game, “I’m sure she’ll be evaluated soon. She asked me to sub her out there, and she looked uncomfortable, so that was the reason we took her out there. And then we’re just, you know, we’ll just be hoping that she’ll be OK.”

The 6-4 forward from Connecticut missed 13 games during the regular with a bone bruise on her right knee.

Volleyball takes two of three at Long Beach Tourney, reaches 7-1

The Oregon women won in four sets over the University of California Riverside Saturday, reaching 7-1 on the season. They travel to Oregon State on Thursday.

The Ducks hit .441 in the decisive fourth set, led by Sophia Meyers with 16 kills and four blocks, Valentina Vaulet with 11 kills and a service ace. Cora Taylor posted 30 assists and 11 digs, Ksenija Tomic nine digs.
