Former Duck Sagapolutele shreds Beavs in first college start
At Reser Stadium Saturday the Cal Bears of the ACC pounded Oregon State 34-15 with former Oregon signee Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele throwing for three touchdowns.
Sagapolutele flipped to Oregon last December on Early Signing Day, participated in practice during the Rose Bowl run-up, then elected to enter the transfer portal to play for the Bears, looking for an opportunity to start as a true freshman.
It was the first indication the Ducks had something special in Dante Moore, though it's good to see the young man make the most of his situation, completing 67 percent of his passes in his first college start for 234 yards, also running twice for 30 yards as his squad jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead.

“Jaron is going to have a lot to learn. He'll have plenty to take away from this. But he threw the ball very, very well,” long-ago Oregon defensive back, longtime Cal coach Justin Wilcox said about his starter. “We expected him to, because that's exactly what he does in practice.”
Beavers' new starter Maalik Murphy, a transfer from Duke, matched Sagapolutele for yards with 244 on 21-33 passing but he threw for no touchdowns with one interception. The Beavers also fumbled once and couldn't run the football, 27 carries for 65 yards, 2.7 a carry.
Men's and Women's Cross Country open 2025 campaigns with top 15 finishes
Though they won't run again until later in September, Sergio Del Barrio, Ella Thorsett and Katie Clute turned in top finishes for the men's and women's cross country teams last week.
At the Mizzou Opener in Columbia, Missouri Del Barrio ran the 5K course in 14:54, good for third in an elite field from Missouri, St. Louis University and Wisconsin. In the women's opener at the UVU Invitational in Orem, Utah, Thorsett and Clute finished fourth and fifth among runners from four schools.
Herbert, Chargers set to host Kansas City Friday
The NFL begins its 2025 season with 28 Pro Ducks on active rosters and another nine on practice squads around the league.
On Friday, Justin Herbert and the Chargers host AFC Champion and division rival Kansas City at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, 5 p.m. PT on YouTube TV. The Chiefs are a 3.5-point favorite.
Every streaming service has just enough content to make it expensive to watch TV.
Joining Herbert in suiting up for the Bolts are former Ducks Troy Dye and rookies Jamaree Caldwell and Nikko Reed. Jeffrey Bassa takes his first regular season NFL snaps for Kansas City.
