Three Ducks make Sporting News preseason All-American
The Sporting News named Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman a first-team preseason All-American Wednesday. Running back Makhi Hughes and center Iapani Laloulu made the second team.
Bill Bender of the magazine wrote of the transfer safety, "Thieneman (6-0, 205) averaged 105 tackles at Purdue the last two seasons. He was tied for second in the Big Ten with six interceptions in 2023 – and he should get more opportunities to make pass breakups at Oregon. Thieneman fits with defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi."
Hughes ran for 2,779 yards in two seasons at Tulane with 22 rushing touchdowns. PFF credits him with 1,982 of those yards after contact. His burst and determination, coupled with a big, nimble Oregon offensive line, should make him dynamic in the Big Ten.
Laloulu didn't allow a sack in 2024. He's on the watch lists for both the Rimington Award and the Outland Trophy after starting 15 straight games for the Ducks.
The venerable sports weekly didn't list honorable mentions, but Matayo Uiagalelei, Kenyon Sadiq, Bryce Boettcher, Isaiah World, Dante Moore, Dakorien Moore, Immanuel Pregnon,Bear Alexander, A'Mauri Washington, Ify Obidegwu ahd Jahlil Florence are going to be names to know as college football moves out of talking season and into hitting season.
Motions denied in Daylen Austin court case, trial set for August 15
Lane County Circuit Judge Stephen Morgan denied a motion to dismiss a felony charge against Oregon defensive back Daylen Austin, who was involved in a fatal car accident on April 15.
Austin's attorney Bryan Boender argued that the 20-year-old defendant was a victim of misleading police testimony and racial stereotypes, that the victim, Frank William Seaman, 46, brandished a hammer and jumped in front of his car.
Asked about the decision at his weekly media availability, Dan Lanning said, "We have a plan in place. We'll adjust."
