September is in the books, and as October begins, teams in the NFL will start to prove that they're Playoff contenders while the pretenders will fall out of the race. Coming into the season, the New York Giants were one of the teams drawing a ton of excitement, but with the injuries to Jaxson Dart and Brian Burns, the team is treading water.

The lone bright spot for the Giants this season has been the play of their safety and former Oregon Ducks star Jevon Holland. After an up and down first season in New York, Holland has been playing at a dominant level in the back end of the defense.

Jevon Holland earns Player of the Month honors for dominant start to the season

On Thursday, the NFL announced its players of the month for both the NFC and AFC, with Jevon Holland earning the NFC Player of the Month honors.

It's been a dominant start for the Giants' safety, as he's helped keep this team afloat and earn a 2-1 record despite all the injuries this team is racking up. With a younger group at cornerback, Holland has helped mask this defense's weaknesses and is making teams regret every time they throw at him.

Holland finished the month of September with 12 total tackles, 7 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, 4 pass defenses, and 3 interceptions. Jaxson Dart's injury has made it hard for the offense to score, but Holland has been playing at another level to try and get the offense as many chances as possible at scoring.

The award marks Jevon Holland's first of his career, as the Oregon alum is still looking for his first Pro Bowl or All-Pro nominations. The good news for Holland is that Dennard Wilson's defense fits his strengths, and as long as the coordinator sticks around in New York, he should only continue to blossom.

There's a ton of pressure to perform on Holland after the Giants signed him to a 3-year deal worth $45.3 million last offseason. After a rocky first season, the Giants fans are falling in love with Holland, especially after his game saving interception against the Titans. If Holland is able to finish the season the way it's started for him, it'll set him up to be a potential Pro Bowler and All-Pro, which will only help heading into the final year of his contract.
