Oregon football season returned this weekend, and with the return of the college football season comes the return of the recruiting season. The first home game of the season brought a loaded group of recruits to Eugene as Dan Lanning looks to continue his recruiting dominance. The Ducks have made a tradition out of signing top 5 classes, and that trend will hopefully continue into the 2028 cycle.
Thus far, Oregon hasn't landed any commitments in the 2028 cycle, but it's still very early in the process. The good news is that quarterbacks are typically the quickest position group to commit, and it appears that Oregon is in the perfect position to land a quarterback commit sooner rather than later.
Oregon lands prediction for elite QB Tristin Gaines
This weekend, among the recruits in attendance for the Oregon Ducks was elite quarterback recruit Tristin Gaines. The Ducks hosted Gaines earlier this Summer, and getting him back on campus can only help the chances of landing a commitment. Leaving the weekend, it appears that Oregon did a great job of pitching Gaines.
On Monday morning, Rivals analyst Sam Spiegelman placed a prediction for the Oregon Ducks to land Tristin Gaines.
Tristin Gaines now becomes the second quarterback predicted to land in Eugene, as California native Josiah Boyd has been a popular pick for the Ducks. Rivals' Steve Wiltfong, Justin Hopkins, Brandon Huffman, and Greg Biggins have all logged predictions throughout the offseason for Boyd to land in Eugene.
The prediction for Oregon to land Tristin Gaines may only work to the Ducks' benefit in his recruitment or in the recruitment of Josiah Boyd. Unless both truly want to go to Oregon, the most likely outcome is the Ducks landing only one of the two, especially after landing Will Mencl in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
According to Rivals' Recruiting Rankings, Tristin Gaines is the 86th ranked player in the Country, the 8th ranked quarterback in the class, and the 10th ranked player out of Texas.
The two both have plans to continue seeing other schools and working toward a decision, but eventually urgency will play into the plans. Considering that either could lose their place in the class to the other committing, both quarterbacks leaning toward Oregon could create pressure for one of the two to jump on board.
As Dan Lanning and the coaching staff look to sign another top 5 recruiting class in the 2028 cycle, getting a quarterback on board will only help the Ducks' chances. Quarterbacks become the top recruiters in a class, and the sooner the Ducks land one, the sooner they may start reeling in commitments around him.
