The 2026 Oregon Baseball season was filled with a ton of excitement, and just as much optimism for the future. While Oregon fell in disappointing fashion in the Austin Super Regional, the makeup of the roster gave everyone a ton of excitement for what lied ahead in the 2027 season. One of the biggest reasons for the excitement in 2026 and the hope for the future was the outstanding trio of freshmen.
The trio of Brayden Jaksa, Angel Laya, and Junior Lauaki provided a ton of excitement and big moments which allowed everyone to dream of what level they could reach next season. On Monday, the trio was broken up, and the Oregon Ducks hopes of reaching Omaha took a significant hit.

As a True Freshman, Angel Laya exceeded every expectation, becoming a big bat at the top of the Ducks order. This season, Angel Laya posted a .296 batting average with 14 home runs, 10 doubles, and 47 RBIs. For his outstanding season, Angel Laya was rewarded with Freshman All American honors.
Losing Angel Laya is as big of a blow as the Oregon Ducks could've taken in the Transfer Portal, and now the coaching staff has some serious work to do. The Ducks were already losing two key hitters in Ryan Cooney and Drew Smith, but Angel Laya was a loss that the coaching staff couldn't have seen coming.
The main priority for the coaching staff now has to be finding a way to convince Angel Laya to return to Eugene. There aren't many players of Angel Laya's skill level left in the Transfer Portal, and while the California Native will command a big market, Oregon might have to spend big to retain him.
The Ducks have the potential to be a front runner to make the trip to Omaha as most of the lineup and the starting rotation were expected to return next season. Getting Angel Laya back and making a big addition could put the Ducks over the top, but if Laya departs, putting together this roster gets far more difficult.
The biggest holes in the roster now appear to be in the outfield, 3rd base, and the closer role leaving Mark Wasikowski with a ton of work to do.
