While the actual games have been the focus, in the background, Oregon's 2028 recruiting class has been a bit surprising. After building a ton of momentum with several targets, Oregon has yet to land a commitment in the 2028 recruiting cycle, which is a bit of a surprise. One of the first checkpoints in every recruiting cycle is getting a quarterback on board, and the Ducks seemed to be in a great place early with Josiah Boyd.

The Ducks have been predicted to land Josiah Boyd dating back to July, but the California native has continued to weigh his options. Now, with Oregon looking at other quarterback recruits, and other schools swooping in, a timeline is set, and it could lay the foundation for Oregon's recruiting class.

Josiah Boyd sets commitment date setting the table for key clash

This week, Josiah Boyd announced a commitment date of November 23rd with 3 finalists in Oregon, UCLA, and Kentucky.

While Oregon has seemed like the frontrunner to land Josiah Boyd dating back to the Summer, this has become a serious battle through the start of the season. The final month of Boyd's recruitment could create major swings as each of the 3 schools could realistically win out on the 23rd.

The biggest threat in this recruitment has seemingly been Kentucky given that Will Stein given that he spent time on Dan Lanning's staff. Stein can point to the same success developing quarterbacks that Oregon can, and given that Stein is an offensive minded head coach, it carries a little extra weight.

UCLA can't be ruled out in any battle either, given how quickly Bob Chesney has turned the Bruins around, including his win over the Ducks. Boyd is a California native, and the Bruins are the only finalist that can give him the chance to play at home, which is always a major factor in any recruitment.

According to Rivals' Industry Recruiting Rankings, Josiah Boyd is the 72nd ranked player in the country, the 6th ranked quarterback in the class, and the 5th ranked player out of California. The top 5 quarterback recruits in the class are already off the board, making Boyd the top uncommitted quarterback left.

While other challengers have emerged for Josiah Boyd, Oregon has also built other relationships at the position. The Ducks have also made Texas native Tristin Gaines a focus to the point that Oregon is predicted to land him as well. Gaines ranks as the 174th ranked player in the country, the 11th ranked QB in the class, and the 19th ranked player out of Texas.

The coaching staff has done a great job putting themselves in the mix for two of the top quarterbacks in the 2028 cycle, and now both races are coming down to the end. Oregon seems to be in a great place to land either recruit, and the sooner that the Ducks can get a quarterback on board, the better as they typically become the biggest recruiters in any class.
