Ahead of the 2026 college football season, the action on the recruiting trail is starting to pick back up. After a Summer filled with official visits and commitments in the 2027 recruiting cycle, the focus for the Ducks along with most programs around the Country is starting to build a 2028 recruiting class.
As Summer comes to a close, dominos are starting to fall in the 2028 recruiting cycle as players begin to announce commitments ahead of their Junior season. The first position to come off the board is typically quarterback, and as they've started to pick their future schools, Oregon's position with their top target is only getting stronger.
Oregon continues to surge for elite QB recruit Josiah Boyd
This Summer, the top quarterback target for the Oregon Ducks is beginning to look like California native Josiah Boyd. After the Ducks offered Boyd a scholarship in May, he declared that Oregon has always been a dream school, instantly making him a recruit to watch for the Ducks. The issue was that given Boyd's talent level, it was never going to be an easy battle to win out in.
The California native had talked about wanting an offer from USC as he visited the in-state school this Summer. Lincoln Riley instead offered Texas native Trey Wright as his first quarterback target in the cycle, seemingly taking the Trojans out of the mix for Boyd.
The Ducks already seemed like the clear front runner for Josiah Boyd with Rivals' Greg Biggins and Brandon Huffman predicting Oregon to land the commitment. On Monday, Rivals' Justin Hopkins became the latest to log a prediction favoring the Ducks.
The USC Trojans focusing in on Trey Wright is great news for the Ducks, as it takes a major threat out of the race for Josiah Boyd. Schools like Kentucky and UCLA will continue to be a threat in this recruitment, but it's impossible not to feel good about where Oregon stands with one of the Nation's top quarterbacks.
According to Rivals’ Recruiting Rankings, Josiah Boyd is the 31st ranked player in the Country, the 2nd ranked quarterback in the class, and the 4th ranked player out of California.
This season, Josiah Boyd went 172-278 passing for 2,620 yards and 19 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions. Boyd is a dual-threat quarterback who picked up 462 yards and 9 touchdowns rushing, making him a great fit for the Oregon offense.
When Josiah Boyd commits is the biggest lingering question as 6 of the Nation's top 10 quarterbacks have already come off the board. The timeline for everyone else would suggest that a commitment happens sooner rather than later which only favors the Ducks with how they stand at this point in the offseason.
