The Oregon Ducks came into Friday night looking to avoid a 1 vs 4 upset like many teams dealt with on the opening day of regionals. After watching Oregon State fall to Washington State to start the Eugene Regional, kicking off the tournament in the winner's portion of the bracket became even more important.
Early in the game, it looked like Oregon could be heading to a blowout victory, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Instead, of taking a commanding lead early, Oregon gave the Yale Bulldogs some false hope when they made it 6-2, just for the Ducks to blow this game open in the bottom of the 8th to secure victory. While it wasn't a perfect game for the Ducks, Oregon won, which is all that matters on a day where upsets around the country were a major storyline.
Oregon Baseball's win comes with great signs for the future
Pitching off worked out for Mark Wasikowski
Mark Wasikowski made the bold decision to "throw off", opting to start Cal Scolari rather than Friday Night starter Will Sanford. The decision to hold Sanford for Saturday's game worked out in a big way as the Ducks still got the win, but ideally, Oregon would've loved more than 4.1 innings from their starter. While the bullpen was responsible for 4.2 innings of relief, keeping Tanner Bradley and Devin Bell out of the game will give the Ducks all the arms they need over the next two days.
Toby Twist turns in a key relief performance
Relief pitchers who don't pick up a save don't often get a ton of credit, but Toby Twist turned in a performance that could win the Ducks the Regional. Collin Clarke struggled, failing to record an out, bringing in Toby Twist to try and keep Yale at a distance. Twist came in and halted Yale's momentum before delivering a stellar 3 inning outing to spare Bradley and Bell while allowing the offense to blow the game open.
Oregon's top 4 delivered for the offense
The offense being powered by a ton of freshmen is always a small concern heading into the postseason, as you never know how they'll fare under pressure. Angel Laya and Brayden Jaksa were stellar, combining for 7 hits and 4 RBIs, helping make up for the struggles in the bottom half of the order. Add in Drew Smith delivering with a 4 hit night, and Ryan Cooney adding a pair of doubles, and the Ducks will be tough to beat with that level of hitting at the top.
Even Junior Lauaki made his pitch to move up in the lineup with a massive 3-run homer in the Bottom of the 8th to blow the game open.

OREGON BLOWS IT OPEN. Ducks on their way to face Washington State tomorrow night pic.twitter.com/4RxvtS3Vdc
The win means that the Ducks will now face Washington State on Saturday Night at 6:00 PM PT while Yale and Oregon State will face off in an elimination game. If the Ducks can handle the Cougars, Oregon would be in a great place with an incredible chance to advance to Super Regionals.
