This may seem like a simple question, but Ohio State has already played a game this month. The Buckeyes also played their most complete game in their first-round matchup versus Tennessee. The Volunteers looked like a mid-level Big Ten team in the loss to the Buckeyes.
Quarterback Will Howard did not slide but did throw for over 300 yards through the air for two touchdowns and an interception in the 42-17 win. The Buckeyes wide receivers had a stellar game. Jeremiah Smith led the team with 103 yards and two scores off of just six catches. The ground game had four touchdowns between TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins.
The Buckeyes appear to have put their loss to the Ducks and to Michigan behind them as they head to Pasadena.
On the other side, Oregon is still undefeated and brings that momentum into the Rose Bowl. I feel that rest and recovery following their first Big Ten season is important. Preparation against a faceless opponent that you have film on is also key. The Ducks will be as prepared and as close to full strength possible as they have been all season.
On Saturday, cornerback Jahlil Florence made an appearance at practice and shortly after sent a message saying, "Soon, soon, soon."
Does this mean the Ducks may have him back against the Buckeyes? He has been out with a knee injury since the game vs Washington last season and an appearance would not hurt his potential eligibility moving forward. Time will tell. I expect he is on the field to get back into game shape.
For Oregon, there is one player I do expect to see more of on New Year's Day. Gary Bryant Jr. has not been on the field much so far. He did make an appearance as a return man late in the year, but he could find himself in the slot or stretching the field against Ohio State on Wednesday.
Momentum is a funny thing sometimes. Oregon should not show any signs of rust after having time off and we already know that Ohio State will be firing on all cylinders. The College Football Playoff matchup between Oregon and Ohio State is set for 2 p.m. PT from the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
