Oregon win in Kinnick downpour a tribute to running backs, offensive line

Noah Whittington's burst, toughness and vision yielded 118 yards on 17 carries in the incessant driving rain as the Oregon offensive line, playing without right tackle Alex Harkey, punched through Iowa for 261 yards in an 18-15 victory.

The Ducks needed every play they made in Kinnick Stadium, starting with three pressure field goals in the cold, wet conditions by Oregon senior kicker Atticus Sappington, including one at the end of each half.

In all he hit from 46, 40 and 39 yards, thanks in part to his snapper Luke Basso and holder James Ferguson-Reynolds, flawless work in a tough November Big Ten environment.

What a job too by by the Oregon running backs and offensive line: 261 yards, 7.3 a carry, 0 sacks, 1 TFL all day. Noah Whittington led the way with 17 carries for 118 yards, but the Ducks got big runs too from Jordon Davison, Dierre Hill and quarterback Dante Moore, who had the longest gain of the day, a 49-yard Zone-Read keeper.

The line held together in the noise and wet, playing without starting right tackle Alex Harkey, out with a sprained ankle. Gernorris Wilson filled in admirably while Emmanuel Pregnon, Poncho Laloulu, Dave Iuli and Isaiah World punched holes through an Iowa defense that had allowed just 84 yards a game and 2.64 yards a carry going into the contest.

It was the most quintessentially Big Ten win of their time in the league. This team is now 11-0 on the road in the conference.

At 8-1 they're solidly in the hunt for a first-round playoff game at home with a game Friday night in Autzen Stadium against 6-3 Minnesota, idle this week after beating Michigan State 23-20 in overtime on November 1st.

The Ducks follow that with a home game against No. 19, 7-2 USC followed by another tough road trip to 6-3 Washington, which lost today in the driving rain in Madison to the last-place Badgers, ending the Huskies playoff hopes.

In Iowa City, the offensive line made it happen, even while missing one of their brothers. It was a poised and courageous performance with a single false start and one call for holding on a day of appallingly uneven officiating.

The Ducks hung together for a clutch comeback victory on the road while missing three starters, Kenyon Sadiq, Dakorien Moore and Harkey, then lost another one when Gary Bryant Jr. injured his ankle while being tackled after a 22-yard catch on a deep crossing route.
