Oregon women back on track after 15-point win over Washington State Cougars
By Sam Fariss
After a shocking victory over the then-No. 12 Baylor Bears, the Oregon women's basketball team was catapulted into the Top 25 but after losing two games in a row, the Ducks lost their momentum and their ranking.
However, on Wednesday, Oregon got back on track with a win over a familiar foe: former Pac-12 opponent Washington State.
Amina Muhammad and Peyton Scott led the Ducks' charge to victory with a combined 45 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals against the Cougars. Center Phillipina Kyei came off the bench to contribute an additional 13 points and 10 rebounds – a double-double performance by the senior.
Transfer guard Deja Kelly, who has been an instrumental part of the Ducks' success so far this season, struggled to find her shot throughout the matchup. Kelly scored just 4 points before the final whistle blew, shooting 2-of-10 from the field and 0-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Despite Kelly's shooting slump throughout the game, the Ducks were able to walk away with an impressive 85-70 victory over Washington State, improving their record to 7-2 overall for the season.
So far this year, Oregon has yet to lose at home (7-0) and only suffered losses to Georgia Tech and South Dakota State during the Hawai'i North Shore Showcase.
The Ducks will start Big Ten play against another former Pac-12 opponent when they host the USC Trojans, who are currently ranked No. 6 in the country, at 1 p.m. PT on Dec. 7. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and the two Big Ten newcomers will tip-off from Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, OR.
