12-team 2024 College Football Playoff rankings prediction after Week 4
Another week of college football has come and passed and this time, Oregon had a bye.
There was plenty of exciting action around the country in Week 4, but the Ducks weren't the only top-10 team to have a bye and miss out on some of the fun. Georgia and Alabama also had the week off. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are going to be battling for the top spot in the SEC with Texas, Tennessee, and Ole Miss this season so we'll surely see this top 10 fluctuate.
The Ducks sat back and watched as some fellow ranked Big Ten teams took the field and one which is also formerly a Pac-12 member lost on the road despite being a favorite. USC went to Michigan and lost a heartbreaker in the final minute.
Ohio State dominated Marshall, Penn State took it to Kent State, and Illinois went into Lincoln and upset Nebraska on Friday night.
Here's what the College Football Playoff field should look like after another crazy week.
Rank | Team | Why they're here | Last projection |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Texas | SEC champ | 1 |
2 | Ohio State | Big Ten champ | 2 |
3 | Miami | ACC champ | 3 |
4 | Utah | Big 12 champ | NR |
5 | Georgia | At-large | 5 |
6 | Tennessee | At-large | 10 |
7 | Alabama | At-large | 6 |
8 | Ole Miss | At-large | 7 |
9 | Oregon | At-large | 9 |
10 | Penn State | At-large | NR |
11 | Michigan | At-large | NR |
12 | Boise State | Top G5 team | NR |
As you can see, there are a lot of teams who weren't ranked in my last top-12 playoff projection a week ago that made this week's list like Utah, Penn State, Michigan, and Boise State. Each of those teams had strong weeks with Utah and Michigan securing ranked victories and impressive AP voters.
The playoff rankings will be interesting every week because we could see a new team at that No. 12 spot to represent the Group of Five. This week, it's Boise State but teams like UNLV, James Madison, and Liberty will be flirting with that spot all season.
Week 5 should be fun.
