While the Ducks didn’t have to utilize their punt game very frequently in 2023, punter Ross James had pretty mediocre performances throughout the season.

While his leg’s power is not in question, I would say that his accuracy and timing aren’t quite where it needs to be for total effectiveness.

Many sports fans scoff at punters and kickers but being able to consistently pin the opposing team’s offense within the 10-yard line helps to maximize just how far they have to march downfield for points.

James’ punts were only fair-caught 55.6 percent of the time which means that returners found it in their favor to attempt to run the ball back. Only 11 of his 27 punts were within the 20-yard line and each punt only averaged 48.4 yards.

Punter Luke Dunne will be entering his sophomore year for the Ducks and has experience punting the ball in both rugby and Australian football.

Dunne is a part of Lanning’s 2023 signing class.
