Former Oregon football QB Anthony Brown shows efficiency with Buffalo Bills
Anthony Brown was thrown into a new setting with new players, and a different team. After spending time in Baltimore with the Ravens and a short stint with the Raiders in Las Vegas. The former Oregon football starter was signed as an emergency replacement at quarterback and saw snaps on Saturday.
NFL preseason games are not what they used to be. Now teams are holding out most, or all of their starters by the time they get to the third and final act before the games are real. It helps to prevent injuries and there is typically not a major position battle to be won in the final preseason contest.
On Saturday, Brown -- who signed with the Bills earlier this week -- saw quite a bit of the field.
Ben DiNucci started the game finishing 11-for-15 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown. He also lost a fumble in the loss versus Carolina. While the Panthers won the game, it was closer than some might think. Brown came in for the second half and was effective. He finished the game 11-for-12 passing for 102 yards and had one play on the ground, a run for 14 yards. I realize this was against mostly second, third, and even fourth-string players, but for only being with the team for less than a week, I found it to be a solid performance.
Throwing for 100 yards to new teammates may not be enough to get him on the roster in Buffalo, but it could help him land on their practice squad or a practice squad for another team. We will know the answer in the next few days. Cut day for teams to get to the 53-man roster is Tuesday.
For Brown, having experience in the NFL may help put him above a college player who has not seen time at the next level. The Bills open the 2024 regular season hosting the Arizona Cardinals at 10 a.m. PT on Sept. 8.
