Hey Big Ten fans, coaches, athletes, and more:
The Oregon Duck, one of the most iconic college mascots in the world, is just called 'The Duck.'
Yes, you hear folks like Lee Corso refer to the beloved mascot as 'Puddles' but that hasn't been his proper name in over a decade.
To begin with, how many ducks do you know? When people say 'The Duck,' you have to admit that only one character comes to mind.
And yes, you can admit that the Oregon Ducks have already taken over the Big Ten mascot scene

The tale of the 'Puddles' nickname is a little complicated, and very intertwined with a major brand that everyone in the world knows: Disney.
Since the early 1900s, the state of Oregon was referred to as the Webfoot state which eventually evolved into a nickname for UO students and then later progressed to the a duck mascot.

In 1947, Oregon's athletic director Leo Harris struck a deal with the one and only Walt Disney to use the image and likeness of Donald Duck (hence the ever-familiar appearance of The Duck).
However, in 1910, the contract with Disney expired and the university could no longer use the nickname 'Puddles' since it was a part of the original agreement.
So, nowadays, if you want to be politically correct, Oregon's mascot is just The Duck, that's his name and that's all it needs to be.
