Oregon Ducks DB Jabbar Muhammad snags spot on 2024 Nagurski Trophy watch list

The Oregon Ducks did a great job of getting Jabbar Muhammad to join their roster when he made the move from Washington. Now he's heading into 2024 on the Nagurski Trophy watch list.

Another preseason award watch list, another Oregon Duck getting meaningful recognition. The Oregon football team’s latest player to earn a spot on the 2024 preseason Nagurski Trophy watch list is defensive back Jabbar Muhammad, who is continuing to solidify his status as one of the nation’s top defensive players to keep an eye on heading into the 2024 Oregon football season.

For those that aren’t aware, the Nagurski Trophy is handed out to the player voted to be the best defensive player in the country. As of right now, there are 75 players on the preseason watch list. But there’s a real chance that Muhammad sees his name on that list as it narrows throughout the season.

Jabbar Muhammad is relatively new to Eugene as he joined Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks football team after a strong 2023 campaign with the Washington Huskies. Last season, Muhammad managed to help the Huskies make it all the way to the national championship game and he made 15 starts for Washington along the way.

During that College Football Playoff run with Washington, Muhammad managed to finish the season with a total of 46 tackles, three interceptions, five tackles for loss, and two sacks. He was a star on a really talented team. 

And there’s a very real chance that he has another impressive season this year. Just, you know, it’s for a different team in the Pacific Northwest. 

Muhammad brings elite skills into Oregon’s secondary and he can continue to bolster an already impressive (and still improving) defensive unit this season. As the Oregon Ducks make the move into the Big Ten, having a defensive back like Muhammad to help elevate the Ducks’ pass defense will be crucial in matchups against the Big Ten’s top teams.

He’s definitely someone worth watching as the Ducks take on teams like the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, and Wisconsin Badgers (among other talented Big Ten teams).
