Oregon Ducks’ Will Stein among highest paid offensive coordinators in country ahead of 2024 college football season

Dan Lanning is paying his offensive coordinator Will Stein a lot of money, but Stein certainly proved to be a great architect for the Oregon offense last season.

The architect of the 2023 Oregon Ducks offense that thrived all throughout the season is officially one of the highest paid offensive coordinators in the country. Will Stein, Oregon football’s offensive coordinator, helped the Ducks get a dozen wins while orchestrating a system that allowed for Ducks quarterback Bo Nix to thrive.

And he’s being paid pretty handsomely.

Stein is reportedly making aroun $1.4 million on an annual basis. Which, you know, that’s a pretty substantial amount of money, all things considered.

But, you could definitely argue that he’s worth that.

Last season, Oregon averaged a whopping 531.4 total yards of offense per game. That ranks as the second best offense in the country (in that specific category), coming just behind the LSU Tigers. The aforementioned Ducks quarterback who was thriving last season? Yeah, in Stein’s offense, Nix threw for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns against just three picks.

The Ducks were a lot of fun to watch and they were incredibly difficult for opposing defenses to slow down. So, credit to Stein for that.

But, while Stein is making a lot of money, he’s not the highest paid offensive coordinator in the country.

Oregon football: Ducks’ offensive coordinator Will Stein listed among top highest paid offensive coordinators for 2024 college football season

Here’s what the full list of the top paid offensive coordinators looks like, according to Football Scoop:

  1. $2.1 million: Mike Denbrock, Notre Dame
  2. $1.85 million: Andy Ludwig, Utah
  3. $1.75 million: Garrett Riley, Clemson
  4. $1.65 million: Charlie Weis, Jr., Ole Miss
  5. $1.6 million: Andy Kotelnicki, Penn State
  6. $1.5 million: Kirby Moore, Missouri | Bobby Petrino, Arkansas
  7. $1.4 million: Mike Bobo, Georgia | Kirk Ciarrocca, Rutgers | Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska | Will Stein, Oregon

The Ducks would be wise to continue paying Stein exorbitant amounts of money. There’s a very good chance that someone comes calling for him to be their head coach sooner rather than later.

He’s young, sure, but Oregon should do everything possible to keep the 34-year-old OC in Eugene for as long as possible. Because guys like Dan Lanning, Kenny Dillingham, and GJ Kinne are providing precedents for hiring young, innovative, and exciting coaches like Stein.
