Oregon football 2024 summer opponent preview: Meet the Ohio State Buckeyes
By Ethan Lee
One of the biggest games of the 2024 Oregon football season (arguably the biggest game of the 2024 Oregon football season) will take place on October 12th as the Oregon Ducks welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes to Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
But this isn’t just a big game for Oregon and Ohio State. Nor is it just a big game for the Big Ten. This highly anticipated matchup features two of the best teams in the country meeting up with national championship implications on the line.
So, let’s get familiar with Oregon’s opponent here. Let’s meet the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ohio State Buckeyes head coach: Ryan Day
Going into the 2024 Ohio State football season, Ryan Day is entering his sixth year of leading the Buckeyes as their head coach. During his time in Columbus, Day has compiled an impressive 56-8 record and he’s been great, winning Big Ten titles and appearing in the national championship game.
But, despite all the wins he’s racked up, Day hasn’t been able to win a national title. And that is something Ohio State football fans are growing a bit impatient about.
Conference: Big Ten
The Ohio State Buckeyes have long been one of the most prominent programs in the Big Ten. They’ve thrived in this conference for a long time and are generally one of the first Big Ten teams that people think of when they think of this conference.
Historical record
Ohio State holds a 9-1 all-time advantage over Oregon. The Buckeyes won the first 9 meetings between the schools before Oregon finally broke through with a 35-28 victory in Columbus in 2021. Notable matchups include Ohio State's win in the 2015 national championship game and Oregon's upset win in 2021.
2023 Ohio State record
The Ohio State Buckeyes are once again entering the season as one of the favorites to win the Big Ten and they’re looking like a true contender for a national title this season. The Buckeyes are coming off an 11-2 season in 2023 that saw them lose to rival Michigan and fall to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. But, this year, they added plenty of talent through the transfer portal and brought Chip Kelly in to be their offensive coordinator.
