In the Wisconsin Badgers, there’s a very good chance the Oregon Ducks will be taking on a formidable opponent on November 16, 2024. That shouldn’t be that strong of a statement to make given their head coach, when this game is being played, and where it’s taking place.
This matchup, taking place at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin, could certainly end up being a highlight of the Ducks’ 2024 football schedule. Heck, they might even end up playing in snow.
Let’s take a closer look at the Badgers and see what Oregon football fans need to know about this traditional Midwest member of the Big Ten.
Who is the opponent?
Throughout much of their existence, the Wisconsin Badgers have long been a force in college football. They’re known for their strong running game, stout defense, and passionate fanbase. And this game marks a rare trip to the Midwest for the Ducks (though these will likely become more common now that Oregon is in the Big Ten). I mean, it’s worth wondering if the weather might present a unique challenge given that this game is late in the season.
Wisconsin Badgers head coach: Luke Fickell
Arriving in Madison, Wisconsin, on November 27, 2022, Fickell became the 31st head football coach for the Wisconsin Badgers’ storied football history. The program, steeped in tradition and a dedication to doing things the same way over and over again, took a step towards a new era for Badger football as hiring Fickell to lead brought a fresh perspective to the program.
Fickell came to Wisconsin with an impressive coaching pedigree as he previously served as the head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 2017 to 2022. During that time of leading the Bearcats, Fickell elevated the program into a national contender and guided them during a historic 2021 season that involved Cincinnati becoming the first Group of Five team to reach the College Football Playoff.
Known for his defensive expertise and ability to develop talent, Fickell’s background and coaching philosophy align well with what Wisconsin traditionally does well. His track record of success and experience in big games will make him an interesting opponent for Oregon’s coaching staff.
Historical win-loss record
Wisconsin is a pretty impressive program and has seen some pretty high highs. Wisconsin's football program boasts a rather impressive all-time record of 742-518-53, which is good for a .585 winning percentage. Of course, that record has been compiled over more than 130 years of existence and it places Wisconsin among the most successful programs around.
The Badgers have seen some impressive success in recent years. Dating back to 1990, the Badgers became a perennial contender in the Big Ten and regularly finished seasons ranked with frequent bowl game appearances, including the Rose Bowl (which Oregon fans know a thing or two about).
Heading into this season, Wisconsin’s record against Oregon sits at 3-3 with the most recent meetings coming in the 2012 and 2020 Rose Bowls. Both of which were won by the Ducks, of course. And that Rose Bowl history and even record makes this game even more interesting.
Conference: Big Ten
Wisconsin competes in the Big Ten, which happens to be one of the oldest and most prestigious college football conferences around. The Badgers have been in the Big Ten since it got established all the way back in 1896 (when it had the name of the Western Conference).
Yes, Wisconsin is one of the Big Ten’s founding members. That’s a pretty cool thing to say, to be honest.
And in many ways, the Big Ten’s reputation for physical football aligns well with Wisconsin’s traditional existence. The style of play that the Badgers have loved, characterized by a strong running game and tough defense, is something the Oregon Ducks will need to continue to adapt to. Because it’s a bit different from what Oregon typically faced in the Pac-12
Location
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is, unsurprisingly, located in Madison, Wisconsin, the state capital and second-largest city in the state. Wisconsin is a beautiful state and it’s known for cold winters and beautiful lakes. Which, it’s worth noting how the November timing of this game could present additional challenges for the Ducks. Madison's climate is significantly different from Eugene's, and there is certainly the potential for brutally cold temperatures and even snow in mid-November.
