Oregon football's record against every current Big Ten team

The countdown to Oregon's entrance into the Big Ten is on and the 2024 season is less than seven months away. How have the Ducks performed in the past against their future conference opponents?

As the Ducks flock to their new conference, let’s take a look back in history at Oregon’s previous matchups against the current Big Ten roster.

The Big Ten is currently comprised of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, Nebraska, Rutgers, Iowa, Maryland, and Wisconsin.

The Ducks will join the conference along with their former Pac-12 foes: Washington, UCLA, and USC.

Oregon is currently 22-35 against Big Ten teams and has never played against Rutgers or Maryland.

Oregon football's history against Big Ten teams:

Illinois Fighting Illini

Head-to-head: Oregon leads 2-1

Most recent matchup: Sept. 9, 1995 – the Ducks won 34-31

It has been nearly 30 years since the Ducks and the Illini faced off. I expect a similar result when the two teams duke it out in conference play. With the Ducks' momentum and star-powered roster, they will most likely dominate the Illini for years to come.

Michigan Wolverines

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 2-3

Most recent matchup: Sept. 8, 2007 – the Ducks won 39-7

This will be one of the more intense rivalries in the Big Ten conference for the foreseeable future. The Wolverines are coming off of their National Championship season and the Ducks have one of the most talented rosters in the country. With Jim Harbaugh gone from Ann Arbor, I expect the Ducks to dominate Michigan this coming season.

Indiana Hoosiers

Head-to- head: Oregon leads 2-1

Most recent matchup: Sept. 11, 2004 – the Ducks lost 30-24

Oregon will not play Indiana during the 2024 season so there will be no 20-year reunion for these new conference foes. When they do eventually cross paths, I expect the Ducks to walk away from the game with an easy dub. Indiana is a basketball school after all...

Michigan State Spartans

Head-to-head: Oregon leads 4-3

Most recent matchup: Dec. 31, 2018 – the Ducks won 7-6

In the San Francisco Bowl of 2018, the Ducks and the Spartans put on one of the worst offensive performances of the year. Scoring a total of 13 points throughout the game, the Spartans surprisingly held the Ducks to just one touchdown. Hopefully, as Oregon joins Michigan State's conference, the Ducks can put a few more points on the board.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 1-9

Most recent matchup: Sept. 11, 2021 – the Ducks won 35-28

I was in Columbus when the Ducks came into town and upset the Buckeyes. Ryan Day and his team couldn't live up to the expectations that they had set for themselves against Oregon and as a Duck fan, I hope the same is true for 2024. Ohio State and Oregon have the greatest recruiting classes heading into the season and it should be a star-studded showdown.

Purdue Boilermakers

Head-to-head: Oregon leads 2-1

Most recent matchup: Sept. 12, 2009 – the Ducks won 38-36

Purdue hasn't been up to snuff since Drew Brees left the program for the NFL in 2000. Oregon meanwhile has only continued to grow over the past two decades. The Ducks will certainly handle the Boilermakers with ease for quite a while after joining the Big Ten.

Northwestern Wildcats

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 0-1

The only matchup was on Oct. 5, 1974 in which the Ducks lost 10-14

Northwestern and Oregon won't have their second matchup in 2024 as the two teams aren't scheduled to play. The Ducks will have to wait patiently to get their revenge on the Wildcats another year. I do think it'll be relatively easy for Oregon to walk away with a win when the teams finally play each other.

Minnesota Gophers

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 1-3

Most recent matchup: Dec. 31, 2003 – the Ducks lost 30-31

The Oregon Ducks struggled on the road throughout the 2002-03 season and the game against the No. 25 Minnesota Gophers was no different. Despite Oregon's 30 points, they couldn't slow the Gophers down on offense and ended up losing in the 2003 Sun Bowl. The Ducks will host the Gophers in Autzen Stadium in 2025.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 1-3

Most recent matchup: Jan. 2, 1995 – the Ducks lost 20-38

At the 1995 Rose Bowl, the Nittany Lions stormed into Pasadena and blew past the Ducks. No. 12 Oregon didn't stand a chance against the No. 2 ranked Penn State team. Only holding one win to Penn State's three, the Ducks are hoping to turn their luck around against the Nittany Lions when the teams finally play again in 2027.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Head-to-head: Oregon trails 2-6

Most recent matchup: Sept. 9, 2017 – the Ducks won 42-35

Closing the head-to-head gap in the pair's from 1-6 to 2-6 in the regular season matchup seven years ago. While it's been almost a decade since Nebraska and Oregon faced each other, I think that this could be a surprisingly close matchup over the decade to come.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Head-to-head: Oregon leads 2-1

Most recent matchup: Sept. 24, 1994 – the Ducks won 40-18

Iowa had one of the worst offenses in the country last season and that doesn't bode well for the Hawkeyes as they prepare to face Oregon's dominant defense in the near future. Luckily, they aren't scheduled to play in 2024 so head coach Kirk Ferentz has more time to beef up his attack.

Wisconsin Badgers

Head-to-head: they are tied 3-3

Most recent matchup: Jan. 1, 2020 – the Ducks won 28-27

I was also at this Big Ten preview when the Ducks played the Badgers in the Rose Bowl. I remember Justin Herbert streaking past defenders into the end zone and Troy Dye hoisting the trophy after the game. I think the Oregon vs. Wisconsin games will be a reflection of the 2020 Rose Bowl for quite a few years in a row.

Notables:

Head coach Dan Lanning has yet to lead the Ducks against a Big Ten opponent. Oregon's first game against a current Big Ten program will be on Oct. 5 against Michigan State.

The Ducks' first conference game will be against a familiar face UCLA the week before.
