Following two years as Oregon’s offensive coordinator under Jerry Frei, Dick Enright signed a four-year contract to become the Ducks’ next head coach.

In his first two years on the job, Enright won six total games. Yes, an average of three games per year. Meanwhile, he lost 16 games, an average of eight a year.

During these two years, Enright had one of the Oregon greats, Dan Fouts, at quarterback and still couldn’t push his team to a winning season. In fact, he couldn’t even lead his team to a season with an overall winning record above 38 percent.

  • 1972: 4-7 (T-6th in the Pac-8)
  • 1973: 2-9 (T-5th in the Pac-8)

Enright’s inability to win games led to his early departure from the program. In other words, Oregon’s athletic director Norv Ritchey fired him before the start of his third season.

In 1976, Enright accepted a job with the San Francisco 49ers as the offensive line coach before returning to the high school coaching level.
