Saturday at 10 a.m. PT from historic Hayward Field in Eugene, the 50th Steve Prefontaine Classic begins with the Men's Hammer Throw.
Televised on NBC/Peacock, the track and field showcase features elite competitors and Olympic Champions from all over the world, including former Oregon stars like Sha'carri Richardson and gold medalist in Men's 1500 meters Cole Hocker.
World record holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania competes today in the discus, newly transfered to Oregon from Cal.
In all seven world records have been set at the Prefontaine, first staged in 1975 eight days after the legendary Oregon runner died in a car crash. At the time of his death he held American records at every distance between 2,000 and 10,000 meters, also in the two-mile and three-mile.
From Jamaica, Olympic silver medalist Kishane Thompson is scheduled to race, a sprinter with a personal best of 9.75 in the 100 meters.
Last time Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran a 400m at Hayward, it was .04s off the American record. 😳
