Going to a college football game is far different than any other sport, especially when comparing the atmosphere to an NFL game. While the atmosphere at an NFL game can feel dead, even the most boring college football games are engaging when you show up. Part of what makes college football so great is the marching bands in the stands and the songs that the entire fanbase knows.

While the fight songs are truly anthems to each fanbase, they don't bring the same energy as some of the other songs tied to a school. The Big Ten creates some of the best atmospheres in college football thanks to incredible in-game hype songs that have become staples of their respective schools.

The 5 best hype songs in the Big Ten

Hang on Sloopy - Ohio State

When you think of college football and all the great traditions that make the sport incredible, Hang on Sloopy at Ohio State is one of the things that comes to mind. Dating back to 1965, the Ohio State band has played the song between the 3rd and 4th quarters to fire up the crowd and the players. While it may not be as recognizable as some of the other songs on this list, it's part of the tradition that makes the sport great.

Mr. Brightside - Michigan

While their rival has the tradition of Hang on Sloopy, Michigan has found a newer tradition that has quickly skyrocketed up every ranking of in-game sounds. Michigan has played Mr. Brightside at every home game since the 2017 season, and with each year that passes, The Big House only seems to get louder. While the whole story the song is telling doesn't make much sense as a hype song, anytime you can get 107,000 fans screaming along, it's great for the atmosphere.

Kernkraft 400 (Zombie Nation) - Penn State

Few atmospheres are as electric as a night game in Happy Valley, especially when Penn State fans get their wish with a white-out game. Part of what makes the atmosphere incredible is Kernkraft 400, commonly known as Zombie Nation. Whether it's a big moment, a big play just happened, or the fans are getting ready for the game, they can break into the song on their own with their famous We Are Penn State chants.

Shout - Oregon

In a nod to the movie Animal House, which was filmed on Oregon's campus, the Ducks have played the song Shout during between the 3rd and 4th quarters every year since 2010. While the trend is newer, it finds a way to connect with the older fans as well as the students, which leads to the entire fanbase creating an electric atmosphere.

Jump Around - Wisconsin

If you're making a list of songs that get an entire arena into the action, Jump Around at Camp Randall has to be the clear starting point for any list. The song has been a Wisconsin tradition since an October game in 1998, and has managed to live through several eras. The environment, especially when the Badgers are good, is incredible to the point that the entire stadium shakes from the buzz created.
