Tyler Shough is an embattled graduate of the Mario Cristobal School of Quarterback Mismanagement, a former Oregon starter who led the old PAC-12 in yards per attempt and quarterback rating in 2020.
On Sunday he becomes the fifth Duck to start a game at quarterback this season in the NFL, although Shough doesn't count in exactly the same way. His time in Eugene left him so shell-shocked with battered confidence that he transferred twice, first to Texas Tech and then Louisville.
Shough is starting Sunday for the Saints, a radio play-by-play man's nightmare of a tongue twister, particularly if said announcer wears dentures. He doesn't quite wear a clean label as an "Oregon quarterback in the NFL" since he finished with the Cardinals, but it's still cool that he started between Justin Herbert and Bo Nix.
New Orleans drafted him in the second round with the 40th overall pick, and after a 1-7 start and five interceptions, management has decided they've seen enough of Spencer Rattler. Shough gets the starting assignment this week in Los Angeles against the Rams.
With Herbert, Nix, Marcus Mariota and Dillon Gabriel all starting for their teams, Mariota on a temporary assignment while Jayden Daniels rehabs a strained hamstring, the Ducks have five starting quarterbacks in the NFL, although Shough comes with an asterisk. Technically he's a Louisville Cardinal.
Rattler had four turnovers against the Bears in Week 7, then lost 23-3 to Tampa Bay. Now the team turns to its highest-drafted quarterback since Archie Manning. No pressure, kid.
Shough told the media, "No nerves. I think preparation wise, body wise, I was feeling good, so just was going out there and doing everything I can. We'll continue to kind of get in a groove, get better. But yeah, I mean I was ready to go and just got to continue to keep building."
Among Duck fans the rule is, "Once a Duck, Always a Duck" but the gatekeepers who keep track of these things will assign Shough's numbers to his last college stop.
