Coming off a run to the Super Bowl for the Patriots, everyone would've expected upbeat morale in New England. The team went out and traded for AJ Brown and added other pieces to help try to make another run at hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. The lone issue was that the team, for some reason, wasn't taking care of its own.
After Christian Gonzalez somehow fell to the Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft, he's blossomed into one of the league's top cornerbacks. Gonzalez was especially big in the postseason and Super Bowl where he shut down Jaxson Smith-Njigba, who had a historic season for the Seahawks. In the Playoffs, Gonzalez recorded an interception, a forced and recovered fumble, as well as a sack, making a massive impact for the Pats defense.
The Seahawks rewarded their star cornerback Devon Witherspoon with a massive extenstion making him the highest paid corner in the league, and it seemed like he'd only hold that honor for a few days. Instead, negotiations between Gonzalez and the Patriots soured, and it seemed like he may end up holding out to start the season.

Just after it passed midnight on the East Coast, the New England Patriots reached an agreement with Christian Gonzalez out of nowhere, finally making him the highest paid cornerback in the NFL. Gonzalez's deal is reportedly worth $135 million over 4 years with $102 million guaranteed.

The average annual value of $33.75 million per season just hardly vaults him ahead of Devon Witherspoon who reached a deal worth $33 million annually earlier in the offseason.
The deal is well deserved for Christian Gonzalez as he's played like the best cornerback in the league, and now he's paid at that level. Gonzalez has dealt with some injuries in his career, so to have the financial security as he kicks off another season, it has to feel awesome for him. Less than 48 hours from their season opener, the Patriots have now ended any talks of a holdout, and will be at full strength to start the season.

The Ducks can now point toward Christian Gonzalez as a success story when recruiting defensive backs, as Oregon holds the claim to the highest paid defensive back in the league, giving Dan Lanning and Co. a proven track record no one can match.
