The expectations for the Oregon Basketball season were up and down as the offseason began after a 12-20 season. The worst season of the Dana Altman era led to a ton of changes as Oregon brought in more transfers than any other team in the Big Ten. This team already had a ton of questions to answer this year, and adding in Dana Altman's retirement right before the season only added to the questions and concerns for this group.

Given how little this team brought back, there were a ton of questions about who was going to step up and be the leader when the Ducks needed a run, and how all these new pieces would gel together. The Ducks kicked off the season outside of Bracketology for this expanded field, and they'll have to prove they're a true tournament contender when Big Ten play rolls around.

In the first game of the season on Monday Night, the transfer heavy group picked up an 87-69 win over Montana, and transfer guard Tyrone Riley IV gave the fans something to be excited about.

Tyrone Riley IV looks like the elite guard ready to lead the Ducks

From the moment Tyrone Riley IV scored the season opening basket, Oregon Ducks fans were in for a treat with the show he put on.

On a night when 5 different Ducks scored in double figures, it was clear that Tyrone Riley IV is the alpha for Tony Stubblefield, and a player who's ready to impact the game in many ways. Riley finished the game with a team high 17 points, knocking down 6 of his 11 shots. The far more impressive part was the fact that Riley added 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks, making an impact in every aspect of the game.

Tony Stubblefield brings more of a defensive identity than Dana Altman, and players who make plays on that end of the court are going to be the stars of this team. The fact that Riley was hustling to block shots in the paint and grabbing steals to spark transitions is certainly going to make him one of Stubblefield's favorites.

Considering that Tyrone Riley IV joins Oregon from San Francisco, the obvious question is going to be how he'll translate to playing in the Big Ten which the Ducks won't figure out for some time. Riley's shown over the past two seasons that he can score at a high level, and he's just stuffing the stat sheet at a higher level.

If Oregon is going to exceed expectations this season, it's going to take players like Riley emerging as true Transfer Portal steals. Riley is one of the non Power 4 additions to this team, and in the opener he impressed far more than some of the bigger names on the roster. It'll be key to see if he can carry this momentum forward, but it's hard not to be excited about the potential he showed in the win to open the season.
