The Oregon Ducks are still looking to kick off the 2028 recruiting class with a commitment, as several weekends of gameday visits and relationships built during the offseason have yet to result in a commitment. The good news for Dan Lanning and Company is that it's still very early in the cycle, but some of the top players are already coming off the board.
Quarterbacks are especially flying off the board, which is to be expected as they're typically the first players to pick a school. Just two of the top 10 quarterbacks in the class are uncommitted, but it appeared that the Ducks were in a great position with the top uncommitted quarterback, Josiah Boyd. As of late, however, Oregon, which was once called Boyd's "dream school," appears to be slipping with his commitment date on the horizon.
Will Stein appears to have leapfrogged Dan Lanning for QB recruit Josiah Boyd
This week, elite QB recruit Josiah Boyd set his commitment date for November 23rd while naming Oregon, UCLA, and Kentucky as his three finalists.

Oregon appeared to be in the pole position early, with Josiah Boyd as he called the Ducks his dream school while taking visits to Eugene. The biggest issue for the Ducks is that several schools have hung around while he's kept his options open, and now it appears that Oregon could be the victim of Will Stein's success.
After several experts predicted Oregon would land Boyd earlier in the Summer, the tides appear to have changed. On Thursday, Rivals' Greg Biggins flipped his prediction away from Oregon and toward Will Stein and Kentucky in the recruitment of Josiah Boyd.
Josiah Boyd was just in Lexington for Kentucky's thrilling overtime win over LSU, and it certainly hurts when a visit brings that much excitement. Boyd got to spend time with elite 5-star defensive tackle Kellen Hall who also appears to be trending toward the Wildcats as Will Stein has hit the ground running to start his head coaching tenure.
According to Rivals' Industry Recruiting Rankings, Josiah Boyd is the 72nd ranked player in the country, the 4th ranked quarterback in the class, and the 5th ranked player out of California.
The Ducks can still look to swing this recruitment back in their favor, and the biggest goal would be getting Boyd back on campus. Oregon still has home games against Northwestern and Michigan before his commitment date, and getting to show him Eugene one last time could only help the Ducks.
If Oregon does indeed miss out on Josiah Boyd, it could end up being a small bump in the road as the staff has lined up some other options. The main quarterback to watch would be Tristin Gaines who's also been predicted to land in Eugene, and ranks as the 11th ranked QB in the class. Several other programs are after Gaines, and Oregon needs to close out one of the two, otherwise the staff will have to look deeper down the recruiting board.
