It already happened earlier this week with a similar targeting call. With just under 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter – Oregon led 24-0, Oregon Cornerback Terrance Mitchell hit Nicholls Quarterback Beaux Hebert – who appeared to be in mid slide to avoid the hit. Mitchell looked to hit him in the shoulder/head area. With the new rule this season to protect players the play was looked at and ‘targeting’ was the call. Mitchell was ejected for the play and was seen on the sideline – a light applause from the crowd who did not see the call as appropriate.
Players have to be cautious of targeting hits. Mitchell will be required to sit out the rest of the Nicholls Game but is eligible to play for the remainder of the season for the Ducks.
Troy Hill, along with the ‘next man up’ replaced Mitchell in the lineup.
Oregon won the game 66-3. Officials do have another opportunity to review the Mitchell play and could include additional santions against him. As it stands, his ejection was just for the second half of the Nicholls State Game. Had he been ejected in the 2nd half, he would have to sit out the first half of the Virginia Game next week.
